Cultural Concubine Blog

Neither here nor there…

Have some more... (The image probably refers to one of the series of conferences at Orakei in 1879, 1880 and 1881, to discuss and ratify the terms of the Treaty of Waitangi, 1840. The image implies that the Orakei Conference was simply an excuse for gluttony.)

One of the most stunning things here in the new world is the dazzling size of portions in restaurants.

Off course I know that this is a bit of a cliche, but it is really tricky to eat normally around here.

It still is tricky to leave half your plate or half your steak on the plate.
So I have now started to order two first courses for dinner instead of any mains.
Strangely enough Main courses are called Entree around here….

Could there still be an inkling of British culture left in these Americans, deliberately confusing foreigners and allowing some sado-masochism from the serving staff….  Hmmm curious… I  know that Brits like to be slightly tortured by their waiters… waiting… But the US. I am not sure…

The research continues…

(next post should be about the real Frenchness of French restaurants around here….
What is the matter with the flatware… No one can eat a starter without a knife… I say! )
